Big Duke failed to justify his resounding favouritism when second in the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) a fortnight ago, but remains the outright $2.20 favourite in 2017 Launceston Cup betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of classy local Count Da Vinci ($4) and Unfurl ($6.50).

Will Big Duke justify his quote and return to winning form in the Launceston Cup, or will one of his talented rivals post an upset?

1st

Big Duke ($2.20)

There is no doubting Big Duke’s class and the talented stayer is positioned well to atone for his last-start second in the Launceston Cup 2017. Posting a career total of three wins and five minors through nine starts, since making his debut in England in 2015, Big Duke resumed this time for fourth in the Christmas Raceday 18 December BM70 (1500m) on November 25th, before running second in the Yarramalong Turf Club BM70 (1600m) on December 7th. Securing consecutive wins in a par of Victorian minors over 1800m and 2040m respectively leading into the Hobart Cup, the Raven’s Pass gelding will carry only 55.5kgs in the Launceston Cup and will be partnered by in-form hoop Ben Allen.

2nd

Geegees Goldengirl ($14)

Geegees Goldengirl has been a standout performer in Tasmanian feature races through recent seasons and is arguably over the 2017 Launceston Cup odds at $14 to win, or $3.80 to finish in the minors. Posting eight wins and thirteen minor placings through her thirty-three start career to date, Geegees Goldengirl stormed home to win the Summer Cup (2200m) on January 22nd and worked home well for fourth in the Hobart Cup last time out, after receiving little luck in transit. The Bookworm mare should find a good position in transit from barrier 9 this afternoon.

3rd

Count Da Vinci ($4)

Count Da Vici has found career-best form since arriving in Tasmania from his native New Zealand and should be right in the finish of the 2017 Launceston Cup. Posting five-consecutive race wins upon resuming in October, the Faltaat gelding ran second to Geegees Goldengirl in the Summer Cup, in what was his only other start prior to winning the Hobart Cup by close to two lengths. Count Da Vinci has been charged with overcoming 57.5kgs in the Launceston Cup and will jump from the tricky barrier 14.
