2015 Launceston Cup the Target for Garud

February 4th, 2015

Having returned to racing in typically competitive form this season, trainer Mike Moroney is confident talented veteran Garud will lay a great account for himself when travelling to Tasmania this season for the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) on February 25th.

Running a credible third in the Lola’s Gift Handicap (1400m) at Flemington first-up on December 13th, Garud returned to the winner’s circle with a  commanding two length victory in the Woodford Cup (1700m) on December 28th before a luckless performance when blocked for a run late and sixth in the Piping Lane Handicap (2000m) last time out on January 7th.

Pleased with the form displayed and work completed by the son of High Chaparral over the last fortnight, Moroney told Racing Ahead Garud will first contest the Group 3 Hobart Cup (2400m) on February 9th before progressing to the 2015 Launceston Cup.

“He looked well placed there and I think that he is going as well as he has ever gone,” Moroney said of Garud’s racing return this time in.

“He has finally got mature as he has always been six months behind because he was bred for Northern time.

“We are aiming all going well to get to the Cup races in Tasmania with him.

“He should be very hard to beat.”

Claiming four wins and a further 14 minor places over his 31 competitive start career so far, Garud began his racing tenure under the guidance of leading European-based trainer Marco Botti before transferring to the care of Moroney for the beginning of the 2012 Australian calendar.

Failing to finish outside the top three in each of his first six starts over the 2012 Spring Carnival, Garud was unlucky to be checked early in his first Australian black type start, the Group 2 Zipping Classic (2400m), and was unable to recover; finishing a distant last.

Competing well over a 2013 campaign highlighted by a close third in the Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m), the gelding out of Global Pearl ran third in each of the Cleanevent Handicap (1800m) and Banjo Patterson Series Open (2000m) upon returning in 2014; earning a trip north for fifth in the Listed Ipswich Cup (2150m) and sixth in the Group 3 Tatt’s Cup (2200m).
