The 2011 Launceston Cup final field and barrier draw have been released ahead of the latest Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival showdown taking place at Mowbray Racecourse on Wednesday February 23.
A capacity field of 16 horses plus two emergencies have been accepted for $225,000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) this year.
Three gallopers are currently battling for favouritism in the Launceston Cup odds with Dream Pedlar, Red Buttons and Bid Spotter considered the top chances.
The Troy Blacker-trained six-year-old Dream Pedlar is the 59kg topweight of the field drawn in barrier 12.
Devonport and Bendigo Cups winner, Dream Pedlar most recently ran fifth in the Hobart Cup (2200m) on February 13 and looks well-suited to the extra distance of the Launceston Cup tomorrow.
After their Launceston Cup run, win or lose Dream Pedlar will head to the paddock for a spell before being bought back in the spring for the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Winner of the Hobart Cup last start, Redoute’s Choice five-year-old Bid Spotter is also backing up in the Launceston Cup.
Due to jump from barrier eight with Michael Rodd in the mount, Bid Spotter is set to carry more weight and has a wider draw for the Launceston Cup than they did in the Hobart edition and so must step it up tomorrow.
Michael Kent’s Red Ransom six-year-old Red Buttons, a dual Country Cups winner last spring, also has claims despite a wide draw.
Hobart Cup runner-up Organised (barrier five) and third placegetter Davcon (barrier nine) are the other most notable Launceston Cup starters this year.
Below are the full 2011 Launceston Cup final field, barrier draw and weights, scheduled as Launceston Race 7 due to jump at 4:09pm (AEDST) on Wednesday.
