The Rodney Douglas-trained Larry’s Never Late yesterday defeated a top field of stayers to claim victory in Tasmania’s final Group race of the year, the $300, 000 Group 3 AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m) at Mowbray.
Larry’s Never Late ($4.20) beat home local hopeful Dream Pedlar ($4.70) with the odds-on favourite and Hobart Cup winner Growl ($1.70) finishing off the trifecta in third.
The 2010 Launceston Cup was contested by only seven horses following the scratching of Grand Destiny and the late withdrawal of Tony Vasil’s highly fancied De Fine Lago.
A favourite in the pre race betting markets, four-year-old De Fine Lago was ordered by stewards to be scratched after vets found him to be lame despite protests by Vasil.
The victory was even sweeter for Larry’s Never Late as he turned the table around after he had placed fourth, eight lengths back from the hot favourite Growl in the Hobart Cup last start.
The Hobart Cup was Growl’s first race victory in three years and having been allocated a hefty 58kg for his Launceston Cup run proved too much for the David Hayes-trained seven-year-old.
It was Rodney Douglas’ second feature win in Tasmania in just four days following his earlier success in the $150, 000 Tasmanian Oaks with Coulis.
A four-year-old Pentire gelding, Larry’s Never Late has now won six of his 23 career starts for prizemoney of over $442, 500.
Next month’s Adelaide Cup is a possible next start for the improving runner before moving on to the Winter Carnival in Queensland.
