2010 Launceston Cup Final Field & Preview

February 22nd, 2010

This Wednesday afternoon, February 24, Tasmania is set to host its final Group race of the year, the coveted $300, 000 Group 3 AAMI Launceston Cup (2400m) at Mowbray Racetrack.

Nine top stayers are engaged in the 2010 Launceston Cup headlined by Hobart Cup winner Growl.

The David Hayes-trained Growl has secured the prized barrier one in the 2010 Launceston Cup

Prepared by master trainer David Hayes, seven-year-old Montjeu gelding Growl is currently installed as the equal $2.80 favourite with the Tony Vasil-trained De Fine Lago.

Four-year-old De Fine Lago placed second to Growl last start in the Hobart Cup and will be looking to get the edge and make amends in this rematch.

Growl, due to be ridden by Brad Rawiller, has secured the prized barrier one on Wednesday giving him a slight advantage over his biggest rival as De Fine Lago and rider Damien Oliver have drawn barrier six.

But Growl has also been allocated the topweight on Wednesday, a hefty 58kg, while De Fine Lago will carry a less testing 53.5kg.

Occupying the next line of betting for the Launceston Cup is Grand Destiny at $3.80. The Michael Kent-trained Redoute’s Choice gelding has drawn well with barrier three and will have Glen Boss aboard.

The 2010 AAMI Launceston Cup is scheduled as race seven at the meeting’s bumper 10 event programme that also includes the running of the $100, 000 Listed Eliza Park Vamos Stakes (1400m) as race eight and the $100, 000 Shaw Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) earlier in the day as race six.
