The 2010 $300 000 Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) will run on Wednesday February 24 as part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival.
It is the final group status event held in Tasmania for the year following the running of the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby on January 30 and the Group 3 Hobart Cup on February 8.
Hobart Cup winner Growl looks to be one of the headline runners in the 2010 Launceston Cup
One of the headline runners in the 2010 Launceston Cup will be the winner of this year’s Hobart Cup, Growl.
Growl went into the Hobart Cup at the generous odds of $12.20 and claimed an upset win in the feature ahead of more fancied De Fine Lago ($6.50).
The seven-year-old gelding has now been confirmed as a contender for the Launceston Cup by his brilliant trainer David Hayes.
Also expected to be amongst the nominations for the Launceston Cup is the Colin Little-trained Ista Kareem. Despite a dismal second last finish in the Hobart Cup, Little has said the nine-year-old Germano gelding always performs better in the Launceston Cup.
In 2008 Ista Kareem ran third in both the Hobart and Launceston Cups before improving tremendously to take out the Group 1 Sydney Cup.
Other possible Launceston Cup starters include the Hobart Cup seventh placegetter the Anthony Cummings-trained Zavite and Heath Conners’ Davcon.
